CH. IONE MAN

Coat by coat.

Founded by Darren “Daros” Woodward — Bridgend.

He didn’t find the craft in a brochure. He found it on site — mixing lime, watching older hands pull a trowel and leave marble behind. He learned it the slow way: first coats, flat light, do it again. Years of walls before anyone knew his name.

What stuck was one idea. A finish either holds up close or it doesn’t. There is no styling your way out of a bad coat. So he built the work on the unglamorous things — preparation, timing, clean edges — and let the surface do the talking.

That is still the whole promise. Fifty crews now carry it into other people’s houses, and not one of them was let near a wall until he said the hand was right.

The school

His own academy, in his own town. Small groups only, so every trowel is worked under his eye until it is right. Nobody leaves with his name on their work before then.

THE ACADEMY — BRIDGEND

Taught at the bench.

At the school in Bridgend, the standard is not a mood board. It is a set of habits. The substrate is right before the first coat goes on. The coat is thin, tight, worked at the proper moment. The polish comes from pressure and patience, not product.

Daros teaches Marmorino, marble and metallic finishes this way — hands on, small groups, until it is right. That is why the fifty finish alike. Every crew on the books came through this room, and none of them went out under his name until he said so.

CH. III & IV — THE FAMILY · THE TERRITORY

One man became fifty.

The Family began with a problem Daros refused to accept: good training walking out of the door and vanishing into ordinary work. So he kept his best people close — craftsmen who trained under him, who finish the way he finishes, working across the UK under one name. Every job is booked through Daros, managed by Daros and guaranteed by Daros. The house that gets the crew from Belfast gets the wall he would have pulled himself.

THE MIXING STATION

Made in South Wales.

The materials come from the same place as the standard. At the mixing station in South Wales, Daros blends and tins the plasters and renders the Family installs — lime, marble dust, through-coloured render, waxes. When a wall needs more of the same batch, it exists. When a graduate needs the proper material, it’s on the shelf. One station. One supply. No substitutes.
